Getting into a long distance relationship can work and then it can terribly go wrong.  You have to be careful.  You need to really consider the situation and make sure it is something that will work.  It can be difficult to walk away from a great guy just because distance gets in the way.  At the same time, it can be very stressful to try to make something work when distance is keeping you apart.

The following five questions should act as a guide to help you determine if a long distance relationship will work for your situation.

Question #1: Can we keep communication open?

You have to be sure that you can communicate with him.  If you struggle to talk when you are together, it is doubtful that you will be able to do it when you are miles apart.  Communication is important in any type of relationship.  You have to be sure that you will have open communication throughout the relationship despite the difference.

Question #2: Is this logical?

You really have to take a practical look at things.  Can you afford to travel to see each other?  Will your schedules even allow you to see each other?  Don’t think you can make the relationship last without ever being able to see each other.

Question #3: Is there an end in sight?

It is pretty much impossible to keep a long distance relationship working with no end in sight.  You should have a pretty good idea of when you will be able to move and be with each other.

Question #4:  Is it worth it?

It will be stressful.  It will be hard and it will take a lot of effort to keep this relationship going.  Are you ready for that?  Is this guy really worth everything you are about to go through?  Make sure you can answer yes to this question as it is the most crucial.  If you can’t say he’s worth it then it is better to pass it up.

Question #5: Does it have to be long distance?

Is there any way to avoid making this a long distance relationship?  If you even considered a long distance thing then you must be serious about him, so can you move or he move to put less distance between you?  If that is possible then go for it.  That would be much easier than a long distance thing.
